I always like to mention that “A Soldier’s Lament” takes place in the same world as the Dark Trilogy. It could have been one of the Dark Stories, in fact, if it wasn’t about a character unrelated to all the others. I wrote the original draft in one night in sort of a crazed tangent-10,000 words that wouldn’t let me go until I got all of them out. If you haven’t read it yet, you’ll notice a couple of characters in it, toward the end, that play a prominent role in the dark trilogy, even if they aren’t mentioned by name.
